Mission Statement:

The Streets Department's Mission is to perform preventative maintenance which will extend the life of the existing City streets, storm sewers, ditching and culverts; to snow plow the City streets, repair and maintain City street signs, to operate the recycling center, and maintain/manage a safe and operable vehicle fleet.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Streets Division is responsible for repair and maintenance of the City’s streets, and removal of snow and ice on 228 lineal miles of road, over 630 lane miles and 450 cul-de-sacs. Other services include: traffic control, election setup, street patching, crack filling, shouldering, weed control, roadside mowing, street line striping, Christmas tree pickup, flags and decorations, maintaining over 6,000 city signs, 315 sidewalk lights, 6 flashing lights and 2 signalized intersections. This division is also responsible for the complete mechanical repair and maintenance on their fleet of plows, vehicles, tools and machinery, as well as providing fleet maintenance for the City’s Fire Department, Police Department, Park and Recreation, Utilities Division, and City Hall fleet cars.

In addition, the Streets division is responsible for tree and brush cleanup, and the operation of the City’s Recycling Center. Office staff also assists residents by providing garbage pickup information and finding alternate solutions for disposal of various items.  The Recycling Center has split firewood, as well as compost and wood chips for residential customers when available.

The Water Resource Management Division is comprised of Street division personnel who are assigned projects to ensure proper flow of stormwater in the City. The Water Resource Management Division is responsible for ditching, end walls, street sweeping to meet DNR requirements, catch basin repairs, cross culvert installation, steaming culverts in winter and special stormwater projects dealing with the installation of sewer pipes.

The Street Department and Utility Department with assistance from several other departments was awarded one of five of CVMIC's  Significant Program Awards for safety ideas in 2014.  The Submission "Move Over or Slow Down" is used to educate the public on moving over and slowing down when they see employees working on City Streets.  Click here for more information.
The Street Department again won an award from CVMIC in 2015 for the "Rack and Stack" plow blade racks that were fabricated in house.  These enable employees to install plow blades safer and store them in less space.  The Street Department won the award for the 3rd straight year in 2016 for the Hazardous Liquid Tank Bumper Protection System.

Each winning program is awarded $1,000 to purchase safety, loss control or risk management related products or services for their municipality. CVMIC created this program many years ago in an effort to recognize and reward innovative programs created by members.  The intent is to promote sharing of resources among members.  All submissions are reviwed and scored by the Risk Management Focus Group.  Detailed information regarding the programs, as well as previous submissions, are available on the CVMIC Website
