"I Am Not Invisible (IANI) is a national Department of Veterans Affairs initiative to showcase the service experience of women, who have served in the U.S. military since the Revolutionary War, in many capacities. In WWI, American women served in France as telephone operators. More than 350,000 American women served in WWII. Two of those women are featured in the War Memorial Center IANI exhibit of local women veterans: one who was the secretary to U.S. Navy Admiral Richard Byrd, and the other was a member of the only all-women, all-Black Army unit to serve overseas during WWII, the 6888 Central Postal Battalion, which earlier this year was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. The WMC IANI exhibit features two Vietnam War veterans, including New Berlin resident, Ruby Scheuing, who was an Army nurse at the 71st Evacuation Hospital in Pleiku, Vietnam, 1967-68. Ruby is the 2022 Milwaukee County Veterans Board of Directors Veteran of the Year. The WMC IANI exhibit covers local women who served in every branch of the military from WWII through the present.
The I am Not Invisible traveling exhibit is on loan from the War Memorial Center Education Department. The War Memorial Center's travelling IANI exhibit is sponsored by Women's Club of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
